Asylum procedure

Everyone deserves to live free from fear and enjoy human rights—no matter their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or sex characteristics. But in many countries, LGBTIQ+ people face discrimination, violence, and danger simply for being themselves. If you fear persecution, violence, or inhumane treatment in your home country—whether from the government or others—you can apply for asylum in the Netherlands. This means asking for protection and the right to live safely in another country.

Health

During your stay in the Netherlands you might get sick or you may have other medical problems. As an LGBTIQ+ person you might need specific medical care, such as HIV testing or psychological help.

Safety

LGBTIQ+ persons should be safe in the Netherlands. This means that you should not be bullied or called names by others because of your sexual orientation or gender identity. COA supports LGBTIQ+ asylum seekers. In every COA-reception location you should feel safe. No one should experience any form of abuse or discrimination.

Culture

Out of all European countries, the Netherlands together with Sweden and Denmark, is the country where its inhabitants think most positively about LGBTIQ+ persons. 7% of the Dutch think negatively about homo- and bisexuality, 10% think negatively about transgenders. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2001. The Netherlands was the first country to legalize gay marriage.
