While you are staying in the Netherlands, you may become ill or have other medical needs. As an LGBTIQ+ person, you might need specific care, such as HIV testing or psychological support. All healthcare professionals must keep your information private. This means you can safely tell them that you are LGBTIQ+ and talk openly about your health concerns. The doctor can help you better when they know all the important information about you.
Healthcare in a COA reception location
Each COA locations has a medical department called GZA. GZA provides both medical and psychological health to asylum seekers. If you need medical help, you will first see a general practitioner (a doctor). If necessary, the doctor can refer you to a specialist. If you feel you need specialised care, make sure to ask for it.
You can visit GZA during the walk-in consultation hours without making an appointment. During these hours, you can explain your symptoms to the doctor’s assistant. The assistant can then make an appointment for you with the doctor or nurse. You can find the location and opening hours at the GZA website under Address and consultancy hours.
GZA Hotline / Praktijklijn
If you need medical help outside of the consultation hours or have a medical question, you can call the GZA Hotline / Praktijklijn at +31 881 122 112. Qualified doctors and assistants are available to help you.
If your question is not urgent, you can also video call the GZA Hotline using the GZA app. Visit the GZA website for more information about the hotline and the app.
Healthcare for migrants with a residence permit
Once you receive a residence permit and are registered in a municipality, you must get Dutch health insurance and find a general practitioner. COA, VWN and your municipality can help you with this process.

Healthcare for undocumented migrants
Undocumented migrants have the right to receive medically necessary care. You do not have to pay for treatment or medication that is considered medically necessary.
