As an asylum seeker in the Netherlands, you will stay in a COA reception centre. COA provides housing, and its staff offer guidance and support to all residents.
f you are LGBTIQ+, COA staff can tell you about local organizations and activities that may interest you. Some reception centres also organize their own activities for LGBTIQ+ residents. In certain locations, there is a dedicated contact person for LGBTIQ+ residents.
You can find more information on MyCOA or ask a staff member directly.
Safety in reception centres
ou have the right to feel safe in every COA reception centre. No one should face abuse or discrimination.
Sadly, these situations can sometimes happen. If you experience abuse or discrimination, it is important to speak to COA staff as soon as possible. They are trained to handle different types of conflict and safety concerns.
Visit MyCOA to learn more about what you can do if you feel unsafe.
Reporting unsafe situations
You are allowed to report any situation where you feel unsafe, including abuse and discrimination. Asking COA for help will not influence your asylum procedure.
You can talk to any staff member you trust. If you prefer, you can also request an appointment at the information desk (infobalie). Check MyCOA for the opening hours at your location.
If you’re not sure how to report what happened, here are some tips:
- Prepare: Write down what happened so you don’t forget the details. Think about what you want to achieve by reporting. Do you want to prevent it from happening again? What would help you feel safe?
- Explain what happened: Tell the staff what happened and how it made you feel.
- Describe how it affects your safety: Let them know if you feel unsafe or threatened.
- Ask for help: Tell the staff what kind of support you need to resolve the situation.
